Puma Drawing Into Dawn
Book design: Franziska Walther
Step by step, we get closer to cougar, frog, puffer fish and friends, as we observe Verena Pavoni’s oil chalk Sgrafitti scratch art coming into being: The animals disappear only to reappear all the more impressively, while every line of Lena Raubaum’s words allows us to approach them on a poetic level. At the end of the book, readers are invited to get creative themselves, and guide an animal of their choice toward the light of day.
Verena Pavoni:
»I came upon the Sgraffito stories through a series of small black and white animal portraits I scratched into layers of crayon. To me, getting closer to the drawings bit by bit, as they gradually emerged from the page felt like magic. Spontaneously, I decided to capture the individual steps of creating each drawing with my phone and found myself fascinated by the narrative power of the resulting frames that seemed like vertical miniature stories unfolding in the tiny space of a single sheet of paper.«
