On the Marionette Theatre

Hanna Jung & Heinrich von Kleist
On the Marionette Theatre
Are marionettes the ideal means of expressing natural gracefulness in motion? Does human observation damage this ability? Have human beings lost their innocence, no longer able to achieve ideal gracefulness?
This essay-story, written by Heinrich von Kleist, appeared in an evening newspaper in Berlin in 1810 and recapitulates a discussion between the narrator andserved as a means of exchangeing anecdotes on the subject, reflecting how the two strove to find an answer to this question.
In this new version of a classic, Hanna Jung has, in her first picture book, expressed all of the fantasy in the original, providing new insights into Kleist’s work.
