Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams
Text by Sylvia Plath
With 19 woodcut illustrations by Nicole Riegert
The American writer Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) who died at an early age left an impressive work; these four short stories give insight into Plath’s difficult youth and her struggle with depression as an adult.
Illustrator Nicole Riegert created highly expressive woodcuts that mirror the haunting mood of Plath’s stories. The stamping technique used by Riegert reproduces the nightmarish recurrence of elements and motifs, like people, places, or situations.
The printing has been set up in an authentic typeface used by American newspapers of the 1950’s. Nonetheless, the timeless theme reaches into the present, in a reviewer’s words, “never before have anxiety and mania found more aesthetic expression”. (rezensionen.ch)
