The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether

Text by Edgar Allan Poe – original title first publ. 1845 –
German translation by Arno Schmid

Here E. A. Poe, the romantic American writer, satirically turns the tables and reverses the conditions in insane asylums of the 18th century. This is one of his gothic tales, a dark comedy that shows doctors and patients trading places; it reminds us what it means to be crazy and humane. This classic is chilling and readable to this day.

Renate Wacker’s monotypes create a provocative aesthetic. These illustrations reflect the bizarre atmosphere in the asylum via washed-out black dots outlining the unusual interieurs and expressive figures: really impressive book art.
